Match your trajectory
Choose the path that most closely resembles a normal, relaxed throw. This is a broad classification, not a measurement.
PRACTICAL MEASUREMENT TOOL
Use the best evidence available: a quick trajectory estimate, slow-motion frame counting or a known flight time.
← Flight & Shaft Aerodynamics GuideChoose the path that most closely resembles a normal, relaxed throw. This is a broad classification, not a measurement.
Record safely from the side. Count from the first frame after the dart leaves your fingers to the first frame of board contact.
Enter the release-to-impact duration shown by your video editor. The tool uses the same flight distance entered above.
YOUR RESULT
A controlled, moderate throw-speed estimate.
READ THE NUMBER CORRECTLY
This tool calculates average travel speed between release and impact. A camera-based launch speed will normally be slightly higher because drag reduces speed during flight. Release angle, dart pitch and oscillation also affect the path, so compare repeated throws made with the same setup rather than chasing one maximum number.
High-speed-video research tracked 225 throws from 19 skilled amateur players and found that launch speed was related to oscillation frequency. The average horizontal release-to-board distance was 2.07 m, not the full 2.37 m oche distance. That is why measuring your own release distance matters.
PRO STYLE REFERENCES
Use these as visual starting points. Match the trajectory that looks closest, then measure your own throw for a useful speed value.
| Professional example | Visible delivery reference | Starting estimate | Use it like this |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mensur Suljović | Deliberate, visibly arcing reference | 15 to 19 km/h | Start in the floated band; measure before changing hardware. |
| Gary Anderson | Smooth, controlled reference | 21 to 25 km/h | A useful middle-band visual comparison. |
| Michael Smith | Quick, direct release reference | 25 to 29 km/h | Start higher, but do not confuse playing rhythm with dart speed. |
| Ricky Evans | Very rapid visit rhythm | 27 to 31 km/h | Tempo reference only. Fast throws between darts do not prove projectile velocity. |
Important: these four ranges are interface guidance, not published measurements of those players.
MEASURE BETTER
The regulation throw line is 2.37 m horizontally from the board face, but the dart leaves your hand in front of that line. Measure the approximate horizontal release-to-board distance visible in your recording rather than automatically using the full oche distance.
